Habilitation and the KeCK Mentoring & Training Programme (2 March 2015)

The event organised by the KeCK Coordination Office for Equal Opportunities and Career Planning in cooperation with Prof. Dr Claus Zimmer on habilitation and habilitation support at the Faculty and the Klinikum was a complete success! Nearly 70 participants learned about the in-house mentoring programme as well as the habilitation procedure, thus expressing their keen interest in scientific progress.

The Chair of the coordination office, Dr phil. Barbara Cramer, presented the comprehensive programme to support young researchers, the KeCK Mentoring & Training Programme. Quotes from mentee interim reports illustrated the respective experiences with the individual programme components, which include the mentoring relationship, individual coaching, workshop on leadership skills, third-party funding acquisition and career planning, as well as support from the mentee peer group.

Prof. Dr Claus Zimmer then provided information on the habilitation procedure. He explained in detail the procedure, which ranges from the agreement on goals with the supervisor, the composition of the mentors committee, the necessary first and last authorships, to obtaining the authorisation to teach.

After a networking break at the buffet with intense discussions, the mentees of the current year met for their mid-term review workshop.

Stumbling blocks on the way to leadership - minor, subtle differences? (23.07.2014)

Where are the stumbling blocks for female scientists on the path to leadership? Dr Susanne Braun addressed this question at a very well-attended network meeting with around 30 female postdocs and professors. Dr Braun, Chair of Research and Science Management with Prof. Dr Claudia Peus, TU Munich, presented highlights from her current research in an ongoing BMBF project on the selection of leaders in science.

The research focused on gender stereotypes and their effect on the selection process. The results indicate: Women are perceived as sympathetic, gentle and empathetic, while men are perceived as competitive, risk-taking and dominant. This resulted in two effects: women were "wonderful", but managers were "masculine". Women on the way to the top therefore operated in a relationship of tension between these role expectations. In order to deal with this challenging situation in a reflective way, an interactive networking sequence enabled both an exchange and a collection of innovative approaches to solutions.

Further information on the research project "Selection and Assessment of Leaders in Business and Science" and on the event can be found here.

2013

Female professors’ meeting (7 Oct. 2013)

A meeting of female professors at the Faculty of Medicine was initiated in 2011 by Prof. Agnes Görlach and Vice Dean Prof. Ulrike Protzer. Since then, a number of female professors and post-doctoral medical students have met at alternating locations in order to exchange ideas and at the same time gain new insights on the topic of gender in medicine and science by invited speakers. The last meeting took place on 7 October 2013. Prof. Isabell M. Welpe from the TUM School of Management reported in detail on her research findings on gender differences in the areas of leadership, innovation and strategy, inspiring a lively discussion among the participants.

For more women’s networks at the Faculty (18 July 2013 and 16 Jan. 2014)

The first network meeting for habilitating women scientists took place on 18 July. The event met with great interest, with nearly 40 women attending in the Virology seminar room. There was a broad consensus that further meetings should be held once or twice a semester in various formats (e.g., as information events or peer groups). The next meeting on 16 January 2014 was about information on KeCK mentoring.

The first session of a dedicated medical mentoring programme at the Faculty and the Klinikum, which consists of mentoring modules between mentor and mentee, several networking events for the mentees and a seminar programme, started this year. There were 17 places awarded to doctors and scientists with a doctorate who aspire to a scientific career and are planning to complete their habilitation.

The information event on this topic was held on Thurs., 16 Jan. 2014 at the Institute of Virology, followed by a network meetingfor informal exchange. Prof. Ulrike Protzer, Vice Dean for Young Scientists, Prof. Janine Diehl-Schmid, Gener Equality Officer, and Dr Barbara Cramer, Chair of this project, presented the programme and were available to answer questions. You can find more information about the mentoring programme here.

Series of lectures

Lecture series in the winter semester 2013 / 2014

In the winter semester of 2013/2014, the lecture series "Science - Gender - Medicine" took place on five Wednesdays from 5.15 p.m. to 6.45 p.m., in which the interfaces of science, gender and medicine were examined from several perspectives. The complexity of the topic selected offers the opportunity to show the potentials of a gender-sensitive researching and actions of gender-competent medicine and to prospect a creative approach to the specificity of both genders in research, teaching and clinical care. You can find more information in the flyer.
